This toolkit will guide you through the initial stages of planning an effective and sustainable WASH in Schools program.

By the end of the toolkit, you will have a workable School WASH Improvement Plan that can be delivered to the school leadership to be included in the school planning and budget.

In using the toolkit you will take on the role of a water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) consultant, advising Mary (a local NGO consultant with no experience working in schools), on the implementation of UNICEF's 3-star approach in schools in her local district. You’ll be relying on your own expertise, and the support of Hamidi, (A WASH consultant with considerable experience working in schools implementing the 3-star approach), to advise Mary as she encounters different challenges and has different questions).

The course is divided into 3 modules which make up the planning stages of the 3-star approach:

Module 1: Setting the scene for WASH in Schools

Module 2: Conducting a school needs assessment

Module 3: Developing a school WASH improvement plan

Module 4: Next steps
