Join us on July 15th when Bara Wahbeh will share insights from AKYAS’ deployment of their new Effluent Diversion Unit (EDU), a plug-in liquid–solid separation device designed to enhance latrine performance. The EDU, installed within a containment unit after a toilet, lengthens the filling time of fecal solid containment (e.g. latrine pit) and enables simple onsite treatment of the liquid fraction. The session will focus on two key areas:
The technical and financing sustainability of latrines equipped with EDU
The potential for wider application of such a plug-in device in the field of sanitation and wastewater management.
Drawing on over a decade of experience, Bara Wahbeh, Cofounder and Executive Manager of AKYAS Environmental, will highlight how frugal, scalable innovations—combined with market-based approaches—can address the challenges associated with pit latrines in low-resource settings. His work across Bangladesh, Kenya, Tanzania, and Jordan demonstrates how practical technologies can empower communities, extend infrastructure lifespan, and support long-term environmental sustainability. The session will conclude with an interactive Q&A to explore your questions and ideas.
